AI Funding Race Accelerates
Nscale is seeking about $3.5 billion in pre-IPO financing, signalling that the AI infrastructure race is entering yet another round of aggressive capital raising. The London-based cloud infrastructure provider is looking to sell up to $1.5 billion in convertible notes to a group of investors while also aiming to pull in close to $2 billion from Nvidia. This fundraising effort comes as the company prepares for a future IPO.
Nscale Targets Massive Funding
Nscale is clearly positioning itself for scale. The company designs, owns and runs its own data centres, GPUs and software stack, all built to support large, GPU-powered AI computing workloads. Nvidia's role in this story is worth watching closely. A near $2 billion investment from the chipmaker would deepen an already important relationship, turning Nvidia into both a supplier and a financial backer of one of its key infrastructure partners.
Goldman Sachs is handling the fundraising process, and New York-based hedge fund Third Point is expected to lead the convertible note round, according to a source familiar with the matter. The notes themselves are being offered at a steep, double-digit discount to Nscale's eventual IPO price. Demand for AI capacity is clearly fueling this expansion. Just last month, Anthropic signed on for a six-year, $45 billion deal to rent computing power from Nscale's West Virginia data centre campus, a contract that has become central to how investors are viewing the company's growth.
AI Infrastructure Attracts Capital
What's happening with Nscale reflects a bigger shift underway across the industry. AI infrastructure itself is turning into a capital market, with serious money now flowing toward data centres, chips and compute capacity, not just toward the AI labs building the models. Nvidia's growing involvement across multiple layers of this ecosystem, as both a chip supplier and an investor, only adds to that trend.
Meanwhile, large, multi-year contracts like the one with Anthropic are giving infrastructure companies the kind of revenue visibility needed to justify billion-dollar raises and long-term buildouts. And once Nscale eventually goes public, that IPO will act as a real test of how public markets actually value AI compute businesses, beyond the hype.
Compute Becomes Strategic Infrastructure
All of this points to an AI infrastructure race that's becoming increasingly capital-intensive, one where access to GPUs, power, data centres, and long-term customers will likely decide who leads and who falls behind. Nscale's fundraising push is a clear example of how infrastructure players are shifting from being background enablers of the AI boom to becoming investment stories in their own right.
