AI Needs More Compute
Anthropic has struck a $35B cloud computing deal with Lambda, a cloud provider that counts Nvidia among its backers. A person familiar with the matter told Reuters the arrangement was signed on August 31, though none of the companies involved, Anthropic, Nvidia, Hut 8 or Lambda, had confirmed it publicly at the time. The project centres on a Texas data centre in Nueces County with roughly 350 megawatts of capacity.
What does that actually mean? Anthropic isn't writing Lambda a $35B cheque this week. It's locking in years of future access to Nvidia-powered servers so Claude and tools like Claude Code don't run short on horsepower as usage climbs.
Anthropic Locks Capacity
The Texas site is being built by Hut 8, a company that started out mining crypto and has since pivoted hard into AI data centre infrastructure. According to the Wall Street Journal, which broke the story first, Nvidia itself will hold the lease on the facility, an unusual setup that shows just how directly Nvidia is now woven into the deals it also profits from as a chipmaker.
This isn't Anthropic's only recent move either. Barely a week earlier, it agreed to pay $45B to rent computing power from Nscale's data centre campus in West Virginia. Hut 8, for its part, disclosed back in July that it had signed a 15-year lease with an unnamed investment-grade customer worth $19.6B over the base term, and the Financial Times later reported that the tenant was Nvidia, tied to Hut 8's 1 gigawatt Beacon Point campus.
Compute Becomes Strategic
Generative AI has created an appetite for computing power that traditional infrastructure simply wasn't built for, and tech companies are now pouring hundreds of billions of dollars into chip-heavy data centres to keep pace. Anthropic, which is reportedly gearing up for an IPO, is treating compute almost like a raw material it needs to stockpile before rivals do.
Nvidia's role here goes well beyond selling GPUs. By backing Lambda, holding leases directly, and striking multibillion-dollar contracts with developers like Hut 8, Nvidia is positioning itself at nearly every layer of the AI build-out: hardware, capital and now real estate. For Hut 8, once known purely for crypto mining rigs, this is a striking second act.
AI Race Becomes Infrastructure Race
Two mega deals in the space of a single week, $45B with Nscale and now $35B with Lambda, make one thing clear: Anthropic sees compute scarcity as the real bottleneck standing between it and its growth plans. The company once judged purely on model quality is now also being judged on how much silicon it can secure. In this phase of the AI race, owning the smartest model matters less if you can't find enough power to run it.
