AI Rewrites Power Demand

Australia's grid operator expects data center electricity use to reach about 34 terawatt-hours by 2035 or 2036, almost seven times more than today. This number highlights how fast AI infrastructure is changing the national energy discussion, making it a major economic issue instead of a minor utility concern.

Data centers are expected to grow from about 3% to 13% of Australia's National Electricity Market over the next decade. Unlike most users, these facilities run all the time, more like factories than typical businesses. Their steady demand adds pressure to the grid, especially during times when overall use would normally fall, making the grid operator’s job harder.

Data Centres Reshape Grid

On the supply side, Australia added about 9 gigawatts of new generation supply and storage capacity between 2025 and 2026, almost twice the previous record. Still, not every planned project is completed. Over a third of listed data centre projects have already been cancelled, showing that big plans do not always become real infrastructure.

AEMO chief executive Daniel Westerman has struck a fairly optimistic tone about the near term. He expects a meaningful amount of new capacity to come online before the early 2030s. That said, he's been upfront that the period after 2030 is where the real pressure will show up.

Power Becomes Strategic Asset

Timing is the main challenge. New data centres can connect to the grid much faster than new transmission lines and power stations can be built. This gap creates a real risk of bottlenecks and higher electricity prices for both households and businesses.

To make matters more complicated, about 13 gigawatts of coal and gas generation is expected to retire in the next decade, with 2 gigawatts leaving just as data centre demand peaks. Policymakers want new facilities to use renewable sources like solar, but some regional governments are pushing back, so the transition may not be smooth. It dwarfs individual billion-dollar projects and shows just how central this sector has become to the country's investment outlook.

What's unfolding in Australia looks a lot like a preview of challenges other countries will soon face. The main question is not if data center demand will keep rising but whether power systems can grow fast enough to handle it without raising electricity costs for everyone.
